Through its initiatives, it aims to guarantee food security for family farmers who live in regions systematically subject to crop loss due to drought or flooding.

How does the program work?

The program was created in 2002 as a response to the droughts that affected several regions of the country, causing significant losses to family farming.

Since then, it has expanded and become a fundamental part of Brazil's food security policies.

GS works like agricultural insurance, which guarantees family farmers a minimum income in the event of crop loss.

Family farmers who wish to participate in Garantia-Safra make annual contributions proportional to their income.

In return, the federal government, states and municipalities also make their contributions, forming a fund of resources for the program.

When a drought or other disaster occurs, and crop losses reach a set level, farmers who have joined the program receive a financial benefit.

What is required to be eligible for the Crop Guarantee Benefit?

To be eligible for the benefit, farmers must meet the following requirements:

  • Being a family farmer;
  • Have an active Declaration of Aptitude for Pronaf (DAP);
  • Have a monthly family income of no more than 1.5 (one and a half) minimum wages;
  • Plant between 0.6 and 5.0 hectares of beans, corn, rice, cotton or cassava.

The benefit amount is calculated based on the loss of production and the farmer's family income.

In the event of a loss of R$50% or more in production, the farmer receives a benefit of R$$850.

The values are updated according to different factors, therefore, it is important to always check the updated value with the body responsible for the program.

Farmers must follow the program rules to be eligible for the benefit. The main rules are:
